MUET REPORT WRITING 2011

Here are my sample answers.

BAND 3 - 4:

Profile of Professionals & Main Goals

The stimuli present a table on the profile of professionals and another on their main goals. In general, the two groups have very different profiles and goals where the younger group aims to make more money while the other focuses more on health.

According to the first table, most professionals aged 18 to 27 are junior executives and earn an average of RM3000 with 5 years of work experience. Only 40% of young professionals are married while almost all senior professionals are married (95%). Senior managers aged between 46 to 55 have an average of 20 years work experience. They earn more than triple the salary of a junior executive.

Based on the second table, both groups have very different goals for the year ahead. The younger group ranks making more money as top priority followed by improving technology and communication skills. Meanwhile, the older group focuses more on health, saving money and prioritising family time while goals related to money, improving skills and new friends are not as important to them.

In conclusion, priorities change depending on age group where the younger generation focuses on making money while the older generation cares more about their health and saving money.

BAND 5 - 6:

Profile of Professionals & Main Goals for the Year Ahead by Age Group

The stimuli present a table on profiles of professionals and another on their main goals for the year ahead. In general, the youngsters focus on accumulating wealth while the more affluent older group can afford to concentrate on health.

Based on the information provided, the profile of a professional from the 18 to 27 years age group are mainly junior executives who have worked an average of 5 years and 40% are married. They only earn RM3000 so and their main goal is to make more money. Also top on their list is to improve their technology and communication skills rather than saving money or spending time with family.

The profile of an older professional is completely opposite as these 46 to 55 year olds hold the position of senior manager with 20 years experience and earn more than triple a junior executive’s salary. 95% are married therefore their priorities have changed to focus on being more healthy, saving money and spending family time rather than on new friendships.

In conclusion, the two groups have very different goals for the year ahead as the juniors prioritise money and skills while the mostly married seniors concentrate on health, savings and family.

  3. OMG!!! Mdm, i just make mistake for this kind of writing.... for the second table, i don't realize dat 7 is the lowest n 1 is the highest...wht i am doing is vice versa.... this will surely affect my mark.. what is your opinion mdm??? help me.... =9

  4. based on your sample, i do agree with the conclusion n introduction but i agree with PreetiKaur.. Im not interpreting one table n another because i link them n analyze both data simultaneously in one sentence. hurm..

  5. Hi faithfuls.. :P I've modified the answers to show you what the average student can answer in order to achieve a minumum pass and what I would consider a high band answer.

The two versions I have included here are different versions fo the same thing but clearly the one that integrates the info should get higher marks.

Anyway, I never claim to know MPM's answers because I don't have any insider knowledge. However, I hope these answers will help guide everyone to improve their proficiency in report writing. :P

If you answered like the first version, with good grammar, you can still pass. So don't stress yourself out if it doesnt look like the second version as it requires very high proficiency in English.

If you have interpreted the data wrongly, well, it is marked based on 50% correct interpretation (task fulfillment) and 50% language so you might still get marks for language. Good luck all!

  8. mdm, how about interpreting the data not specifically, not including the specific percentage?

    ReplyDelete
  9. wani.. just try your best to interpret the data.. not just listing what you can see but drawing connections and linking the information without putting in your own personal ideas.

    50% task fulfilment
    50% language.

    :P

  10. mdm,i would like to ask tat can i choose not to mention all the goals in my answer?because i only relate the highest and the lowest goals to the professionals, will this affect my marks?

  14. Tq, Audrey for making this wonderful blog on MUET. I have use some of the materials here for my class. Very helpful indeed. I would also like to share something about report writing. It should be written without any paragraphing. This info can be found in the muet performance report provided by MPM and also the marking scheme for MUET.

    ReplyDelete
  15. what's the difference between analysis and synthesis ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mohd Izam... that is news for me. Can you confirm the one paragraph for Q1? Sabah MUET writing examiners say that it should be in 3 paragraphs (body can be more) and if 1 paragraph is also acceptable as it does not affect the marking. Do you have a copy of the performance report? And maybe u can make a comment here about the difference between analysis and synthesis?

    regards, Audrey.

  17. hello,
as far i know, we cant give any opinion at the report, but we can give our own opinion at conclusion. is that true?
one more, can we do more than 3 paragraph in the report essay, cant we?

    ReplyDelete
  18. haloes: cannot give your own opinion based on your own knowledge. only comment on the information in the stimuli. do not make your own assumptions.

  19. hi mdm. thanks for this sample =). i got a question though. is the band 5 sample answer applicable only to questions with data compiled in table form ? or does it apply to other types of stimuli as well such as bar graphs, pie charts, etc. ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. applies to all. read the question carefully and they will usually make it clear that you have to link or integrate the information in all the graphs. :P good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  21. how we want to differentiate which report use past tense and present?

    ReplyDelete
  22. intro n conclusion present tense, body past tense in most cases, not all.

    ReplyDelete
  23. when writing the body for the report, should I use
had increased or has increased ?

    ReplyDelete
  24. and one more thing,do we need to include the title in the word count?

    ReplyDelete
  25. under what condition then only we need to use present tense for the body?

    ReplyDelete
  26. usually when describing a graph u should use past tense... when describing facts use present tense.

    ReplyDelete
  27. hello :)
    i have some questions here

    ReplyDelete
  28. hai and thanks for the references answer ..
    i'll really appreciate it ..
may i ask some question that as i know we should use all the information that stated ..
but how about two table / pie chart / graph / etc and contain too many information ..
i just blurr how to do it .. please help me

    thanks :)

  29. Hello..
Do I need to state number of words at the bottom of the essay?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  30. listing is not a good technique because merely mentioning all the features wont get u higher marks, you have to be selective, decide on which points are more outstanding to mention.
amira: no need to use ALL, just the most important/significant. better to find the link/corellation between the all the stimuli.
dahlia: yes, bottom right hand corner in brackets. this blog does not allow me to make paragraphs and right indent therefore all my essays/reports look funny. ah well.. good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  31. ouh .. thanks so much !!
hopefully the question more easier for this season ..
wish our luck for 19 nov ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. mdm..what if i not state the number in the passage but i state the difference that i can find from calculation plus and minus??can i do that thing?? rather than just state, it looks like i dont have any other ways to interpret data..tq

  42. Profile of Professionals and Main Goals for the Year Ahead according to Age Groups.

The stimuli present two tables, Table 1 on 'Profile of Professionals' and Table 2 on 'Main Goals for the Year Ahead'. In general, the younger generation focus more on making money while the older generation concentrate more on health.

According to both tables, it is safe to conclude that the main priority of different age groups differs from one another. Based on Table 1, youngsters aged between 18-27 years, are mostly junior executives that has an average working experience of a mere 5 years, earns a salary of RM 3,000. They are more keen in expanding their 'financial empire' and skills but pays least attention to matters regarding family. Conversely, the older generation of 45-55 years are senior managers with 20 years of working experience, earns a paycheck of RM 10,000- which is three times the average wage of a junior executive.Unlike the youngsters, the 95% married seniors prioritise health and focused least in making new friends.

In conclusion, groups of different age possess different goals for the year ahead, whereby the elderly invests more on health and savings while the youngsters concentrate more in expanding their wealth and skills.
